Cassandra Featherstone's Mer-Mazing Book Awards Mini Interview
"Which of your characters do you relate the most to and why?"
"Ooh!
The character closest to me is probably DELILAH from Codename: The Rift. She’s close to a lot of my thoughts/emotional processes, and her struggles in the books mimic ones I’ve had.
However, both Jolene and Delores have elements I’ve gone through— bullying, high school trauma, betrayals, body dysmorphia, and trying to find ‘your people’. Found family has always been a thing with me, despite not having a bad home life. I’ve always been a ‘Wendy Bird’ according my mom—someone who collects lost boys and takes care of them. My empathic nature leans towards trying to mend broken things."
"How do you celebrate your book releases?"
"Usually, I’m shaking a tailfeather doing promo and parties and such. I haven’t had time to do much more yet, but I do go out to dinner with my fam at some point afterwards and have a few martinis."
"What was the hardest scene for you to write?"
"Okay, there are two and for different reasons:
1) Working on the bad virgin sex scene in Come Out & Prey… because I had to make it to bad and so…common… that readers would identify with Delores and really feel the whole experience as normal rather than a fantasized version.
2) In The Alpha & The Omega, there’s a section of chapters starting with that title that we’re so emotionally wrenching that they physically hurt. There’s a lot of parallels to personal stuff in the Codename books and this one rips me to pieces to read even now."
"What do you love about being an author? Do you have any favorite memories since becoming one?"
"I love telling my stories and letting the loudmouths in my head say their piece—and then sharing it with others. It’s always been one of my great lives and I never thought I’d get to do it as a career. I’m so humbled and grateful that I can.
I suppose the first time one of my books really spoke to readers is my favorite memory. Seeing the book do week and knowing people loved my guys? That made my Muppet heart grows three sizes!"
"What is your favorite genre/trope to write? Are there any genres you plan to delve into in the future?"
"I really love PNR RH (especially shifters), but I’m working on my first contemp now. I constantly have to say ‘ no magic, no magic, no magic’ in my head."
